Recit - Marguerite, Jonathan [Interior of a house. Marguerite is moving toward the door with a small bag or suitcase. She is surprised to come across Jonathan, seated at a table near the door. She becomes agitated.] Marguerite I’m leaving, Jonathan . Jonathan If you walk out that door, Marguerite, Lose your key, forget this address... Marguerite Don’t you understand. I don’t want to return. I want to forget- Jonathan You would forget, our father and mother, Abandon your brother? It’s not what they wanted Arietta - Marguerite What they wanted? Mom and Dad are dead. I cannot think about them without crying. You own this house, our childhood home. Any debt a child or sister owes, I have repaid. I want freedom now. All I want is to live. What do you want Jonathan? Aria - Jonathan If I could turn back time, you know I would for you, When all the sorrows of today Were tomorrow’s dues to pay, And the only thing for you and me Was rising in the morning eating Breakfast at this table, while the sun shone Through that window. Mom would kiss us goodbye, Dad embraced us when we returned. You and me, a bond that lasts a lifetime and beyond. We never outgrow our siblings. We are children still. There is no life without blood. You cannot change it. Family sustains you and then in the grave Preserves your memory. Your life is here, You cannot cut out your own heart! Recit - Marguerite, Louisa, Jonathan [knock is heard] Jonathan Who is that? Marguerite [going to open door] Louisa. Jonathan You knew?! Louisa [entering] Marguerite, are you ready? Jonathan She’s not going anywhere. Louisa She’s leaving with me. Jonathan [to Louisa] Stay away from her! Louisa [to Jonathan] I am not your sister. You cannot control me like you do Marguerite, Exploiting your bond with no care for her. If I had a brother like you I would have left years ago. Aria - Louisa [to Marguerite] Come with me, lovely, There’s a whole new world waiting All bright, like the morning after a dark night. Springtime after winter. You are a flower, still facing downward Toward the earth. Your blooming Is for a short time, would you deprive Yourself of the beauty of the world, Or the world of your beauty? Come walk with me, We’ll live in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Here I’m your friend, I’ll be your sister there, too. We’ll meet brothers we never knew. New children recognize us everywhere we go; There is family in all humankind. I’ll show you. You deserve so much More than this. Turn your face up, Look at me, Marguerite. Bury this life in the dirt. Choose hope, choose life, choose freedom. Recit (trio) Jonathan You cannot choose your family Nonsense, your home is here. Do not leave this house. Louisa She will go with me. Yes she will, come with me. Aria [Trio] - Marguerite [Marguerite sings first half as an internal monologue while Louisa and Jonathan, arguing with each other ] Ah! A home is more than a house; A family is more than blood. A life is more than this... Any bond becomes a chain, Familiar spaces turn to cages. Facing still the ground from which I came... A family that denies its daughter’s heart Holds no claim, deserves no part. [Marguerite addresses Jonathan, while Louisa stands by in solidarity] Ah! Don’t hinder me! Don’t hinder me! Any doubt I had now is gone from me! I gave everything for family, Wanting nothing from them but love. Still I would have stayed until my dying breath, Laid to rest with the family name. For what? I choose: living while I’m still above ground, Turning my face around to the sunlight, To move to the seaside with my newfound sister Who loves me as I have wanted. I’m leaving. I’m leaving. Good bye! Good bye! [Marguerite leaves with Louisa; Jonathan makes no move to stop them, having lost the battle]
